Hey, it’s Melanie! I’ve recently finished All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a very eye-opening look into a soldiers life in WWI. Now that I’ve finished it, I feel like it’s an appropriate time to relate it (a war novel) to none other than…FOOD! I mean, that’s what all the cool kids are doing now, right? Reading war books and using that renewed knowledge to make a connection with the essence of life(for me at least). So, what’s with the red velvet cake you ask? Well, upon reading All Quiet on the Western Front, as I have said, I’ve realized that the young soldiers, around the age of 20, were deceived into thinking war was a glorious thing that would make you a “manly man.” In reality, being in the war was a horrendous nightmare that dehumanized you and constantly made you panic-stricken with unimaginable sights. This, this deception, is kind of like red velvet cake; in that red velvet cake is not really what it seems to be! It’s actually just your ordinary chocolate cake with red food coloring that naturally occurs when the acidic vinegar and buttermilk react. Here’s another interesting fact, since we’re already on the topic and because being smart is cool:when foods were rationed during WWII, bakers used boiled beet juices to enhance the color of their red velvet cakes. My relation of the two does NOT mean you should go about eating red velvet cake thinking you’ll suddenly become “manlier.” What I’m trying to say is, there all lies! War, cake, everything! Including Kim Kardashian’s marriage to Kris Humphries! Okay, well maybe not that. I think I’m going to have to cut it off here(HAHA…puns…are funny, but not that particular one).
Bye and thanks for reading! Have a great day!
Wow, I didn’t know red velvet cake had been around for so long, or that it was a symbol for the art of deception, but hey, good to know.
What other symbol would there be if it weren’t red velvet cake? I mean, every time I hear the word deception, I automatically think of red velvet cake. Then again, I always think about cake. So, maybe it’s just me. But hey, every one’s different!
Well, deceptive or not, I’m suddenly in the mood for some red velvet cupcakes.
